Sharī‘ah Foundations Programme
Details and Registration Form
Introduction to the Sharī‘ah Foundations Program
The three-year Sharī‘ah Program seeks to establish firm grounding in Islamic sciences with a particular emphasis on Qur’anic studies. Formulated for Qur’an bearers and those interested in the role of or currently serving as a mosque Imam or within Chaplaincy.
Rationale
While many Qur’an memorisers and reciters excel in preservation and recitation of the Qur’an, and occupy positions of leadership or teaching, it has been observed that they frequently lack essential knowledge of the foundational Islamic sciences. These sciences are indispensable to them, not only for their own development, but also because they are often approached for guidance in such matters. This program was thus established to meet this urgent need.
Curriculum
The curriculum is built upon the heritage works of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jamā‘ah and follows the jurisprudential traditions of the Shāfi‘ī and Ḥanafī schools. Following an Al-Azhar style overarching curriculum, it has been structured progressively for students by an academic advisory board consisting of university scholars.
Distinctive Features
- The course is delivered in clear Arabic accessible to those who have completed our two levels of Arabic study. All the while Arabic language development continues each semester to ensure that, upon completion, students will be able to directly engage with classical texts and advance independently in their studies.
- Reliance upon the heritage works of the Sunni tradition rather than contemporary writings.
- Jurisprudence is taught exclusively from the Shāfi‘ī and Ḥanafī schools, presenting the opinions of their scholars without the instructor introducing personal views.
- A comprehensive approach to scholarly differences in subsidiary matters, with emphasis on inclusivity, balance, and the etiquette of disagreement.
